BIORAPTOR ECLIPSE SWARM

Lore

The Bioraptor is a highly aggressive, photosensitive, primarily subterranean species that will consume all organic matter, due to their fast metabolism and high breeding rate they can completely devastate a planet’s ecosystem in weeks. Origin: it is not entirely known where the Bioraptor came from, some speculate they have always been hiding under the lands of faerun deep in subterranean caverns. Others say they came from distant stars after devastating their own planet until it was only rubble they came here on the back of an asteroid to feed. What is known about them is that even just 1 can pose a lethal threat. Primarily being sighted in caves and deep underground networks with occasional sightings in the night as they get hungry enough to raid villages emerging through cave entrenches or rare dirt chimney like structures if near enough a hive. Description: Their shape is not unlike a wyvern. Thin, spindly body's covered In Leather like skin with wings cable of allowing short bursts of flight and twin forked dagger like tails. They walk bipedally as they stalk pray, hidden in both legs are retractable bone spears used to pin and immobilise prey. Their heads have a distinctive crescent hammerhead appearance and are made of a strong chitinous material, lacking any eyes on their heads or body they use hyper toned ultrasonic sensor organs at the ends of their head. Using these organs to echolocate pray, this hyper sensitive method of perceiving their sounding leaves one blind spot between their “eyes” right infront of their mouth which is filled with Jagged razer-sharp teeth. Hunting & Feeding: from what has been observed of them from adventurers lucky enough to survive their feeding. They primarily switch between two forms of hunting- 1: lone stalking. when a single Bioraptor is disturbed it will stock its prey through the dark until it can be surprised or has no light source preferably alone as it pins it’s pray down with its bone spears immobilising them before beginning to feed on the still living target. 2: pack/swarm. Primarily hunting in large pack’s through deep, dark caves they will find groups or lone prey before engaging them and lifting them into the air then ripping them apart while fighting over the pieces. It is also rumoured that in large enough numbers they will form a feeding swarm (like locusts) capable of wiping out whole continents, this is just speculation. They have also been observed to feed on their own young when no other food sources are available. Hyper-light sensitivity: Bioraptors are incredibly sensitive to direct sunlight as well as magical sources, causing their skin to burn and blister even killing them if they stay in the light too long. Torch’s and other non-magical or direct light sources do not pose more then a light discomfort or distraction to the Bioraptors Breeding: not much is known about Bioraptors breeding habits, due to their aggressive & cannibalistic nature it is theorised they reproduce Asexually in designated breeding hives/grounds. They’re young primarily serving as a food source through their long hyphenation periods. PLOT HOOKS - (Eclipse swarm) after a long 22 year hibernation the Bioraptors are waking up and they are hungry, coincidentally at the same time as an eclipse. Now the adventures must stop them before they ravage the surface. Maybe your players hear about a prophecy from an old scholarly professor who found an ancient tome detailing the emergence of these creatures. What ever the case your players will sure to be in for a fight. (Village raids) villagers have been going missing recently after a large meteorite was seen crashing into the surrounding area and those who remain whisper rumours they are being dragged off in the night to the dirt chimney stacks far from the village that appeared around the crash site, your adventurers will be tasked with tracking down the lost villagers alive if dead. Maybe they will uncover the origins of the Bioraptors or maybe they will end up missing like the villagers. Sources/credits: Pitch Black & flyfart 3 on Reddit

Keen Hearing and smell . The bioraptor have advantage on Wisdom (perception) check that relies on hearing or smell.

Blind spot. A creature the same size or smaller than the bioraptor standing within 5 ft. of it can use its action and a successful stealth check DC 20 become undetectable to that bioraptor. This does not automatically take the bioraptor out of combat or make it forget a creature hurting it. If in combat the bioraptor will be able to detect the creature as normal as soon as it more than 5 ft. away.

Light Hypersensitivity. The bioraptor takes 20 radiant damage when it starts its turn in bright light. While in dim or bright light it has disadvantage to ability checks, saves and attack rolls.

Eclipse Swarm. The swarm can occupy another creature's space and vice versa. when a creature occupies the same space as the swarm the creature has advantage to hit but will have to make a DC 15 Dex save. If failed the creature will take 1d6 slashing damage and repeat this process at the start of every subsequent turn in turn order after being enveloped, till it moves out of the swarm. The longer the creature stays within the swarm the higher the DC becomes. the swarm can move through any opening large enough for a single (big boy) bioraptor but it will count as difficult terrain. The swarm can't regain hit points or gain temporary hit points.

Spider Climb. The Bioraptor can climb difficult surfaces, including upside down on ceilings, without needing an ability check.

Stone Camouflage. The Bioraptor has advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks made to hide in rocky terrain.

Legendary Resistance. If the Bioraptor fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead (3/day).

Actions

Multi attack. The bioraptor makes 1 claws or 1 tails attack and 1 headbutt or bite attack.

Claws. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8+4) slashing damage.

Tails. melee weapon attack. +6 to hit, reach 5. ft., one target. Hit: 8 (1d12+2) piercing damage and the target is grappled (escape DC 13).

Headbutt. melee weapon attack. +6 to hit, reach 5. ft., one target. Hit: 8 (1d12+2) bludgeoning damage and the target must make a strength save DC 11 or be knocked prone.

Bite. melee weapon attack. +6 to hit, reach 5. ft., one target. Hit: 17 (3d8+4) piercing damage

Frightful Presence. Each creature of the Swarms choice within 80ft and aware of it must succeed on a DC 12 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened for 1 minute. A creature can repeat the save at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. The creature then becomes immune to frightful presence for 24 hours.

Legendary Actions

Sky of blades . Bioraptors will break from the swarm and attempt to grapple a creature and lift them up and into the swarm. If successful the creature will be dropped into the centre of the swarm taking 2d8 slashing damage as they fall. (Eclipse swarm)
